Neighbourhoods across Bristol are to benefit from secure on-street bike storage.
Following successful community group applications, 17 bike hangars will be installed in areas across the city, including Ashley, Bedminster, Clifton, Easton, Frome Vale, Knowle, Lawrence Hill, Southville, St George West and Windmill Hill.
Bristol City Council will work with groups to determine the feasibility of the suggested on-street locations.
Bristol’s first bike hangar was installed in April 2015 by a group of Windmill Hill residents following a community-led initiative. Since then more funding has been secured to provide more hangars across the city. The first of the new hangars are expected to be installed at the end of the summer.
A bike hangar is a covered, lockable and secure pod which sits on the road. It takes up around the same amount of space as a parked car and can hold six bikes securely. There is a small annual rental charge to hire a space in a hangar.
Meanwhile, Bristol City Council has developed a new Shared Use Policy to help improve cycling and walking journeys. The new document sets out different types of cycling spaces, alongside principles for using them and implementing new infrastructure. The council is calling on members of the public to feedback on the policy by visiting: https://bristol.citizenspace.com/city-development/shared-use-routes-for-people-walking-and-on-bicycl .
The bike hangars are funded by the Government’s Cycle Ambition Fund which supports improvements worth £12million in Bristol up until 2018, alongside local match funding from the council.
