Following on from the Great British Spring Clean and Bristol City Council’s Litter Superheroes campaign, Bristol City Council and Bristol Waste Company have launched a new drive to eliminate unnecessary litter from our streets, the Autumn Litter Blitz.
Part of the Clean Streets initiative, and running from 16 to 29 October, the fortnight encourages friends, families, neighbours, businesses and community groups to come together and help tidy up areas where litter is a real problem.
Mayor Marvin Rees launched a Clean Streets campaign in November last year and pledged that Bristol will be measurably cleaner by 2020.
He said: “Following the success of the Great Bristol Spring Clean, which saw 46 community litter picks across the city, we are once again asking people to join us to help make Bristol a cleaner, safer place to live.
“Cleaning up Bristol’s streets is something everyone in the city wants to see happen and I believe we are starting to see some progress – however, there is still a lot more work to do to make Bristol the city we know it has the potential to be.
“The Autumn Litter Blitz is another great opportunity to get involved, have an impact on your local community, and change things for the better. Litter and dirty streets are real problems for the city, but we have the power to change that if we all come together to tackle the issue.”
“Just do it.” says Ben Barker from Let’s Clean Bedminster. “Do a pick, create a community garden, whatever. You’ll find that most people will be less likely to drop things in the future, you’ll feel proud and it’s cheaper than the gym.”
Bristol Waste Company will provide residents will all the tools necessary to clean up their area. They can loan out litter pickers, hi-visibility vests, bags and which all help make the job easier.
Raluca McKett, who organises a group of volunteers that clean along The Malago, which have gone from strength to strength said: "When I organised the first litter pick, I was terrified, because I didn't know where to start and what I needed to do. It seemed like an insurmountable mountain.
"But, in actual fact, things are really simple - talk to Bristol Waste - they will loan you the equipment, send you a pack which covers the Health and Safety side of things and collect the rubbish that you pick. Then, all is left to do is to let people know about your event. I promise, it's easier than you think and it's a very satisfying job - you can see the results immediately, it makes a huge difference!"
